HS District Cuts 3 Teaching Positions
The board unanimously voted to eliminate three full-time teaching positions.
The Freehold Regional High School District abolished two English teaching positions and one World Language teaching position last week. The eliminations, also known as a reduction in force, were due to an overall downsizing of the English Department, according to Communications and District Projects Coordinator Nakell Williams.
According to the state law listed in the district’s resolution, “a Board of Education may reduce the number of teaching staff members employed in the district whenever, in the judgment of the board, it is advisable to abolish any such positions for reasons of economy or because of reduction in the number of pupils or of change in the administrative or supervisory organization of the district or for other good cause.”
The three teachers were recommended for abolishment due to “economy and staffing needs in light of student enrollment and scheduling”, the resolution stated.
Because the teaching eliminations are a personnel matter the district is unable to release the names of the teachers who have lost their positions, Williams said. However, Manalapan High School students, parents, and some staff came out in defense of English teacher Jesse Grabowski, who allegedly was one of the teachers whose position was being abolished, at the last Board of Education meeting.
For over an hour, people pleaded with the Board not to eliminate Grabowski’s position during public comment; Grabowski’s defendants characterized him as “inspiring”, a “mentor”, a “father-like figure”, and an “excellent teacher”.
Grabowski also ran the Drama Club at Manalapan High School and has been a full-time faculty member for almost three years.
Superintendent Charles Sampson said that the three positions being cut were all non-tenured positions so the eliminations were selected based on seniority.
The Board unanimously voted to pass the resolution abolishing the three full-time teaching positions.
According to Williams, the teachers whose positions were terminated are not considered “fired” or non-renewed and they can apply for other positions within the Freehold Regional High School District.

How much money is being spent on administration in the district? Why not abolish an administrative position and save three teacher positions?

Here! Here! Losing teachers is not saving any $$! Now, administration on the other hand....

An odd quote from the superintendent stating the RIF is based on seniority, when the field of education is being driven at city/town, state, and federal levels to ensure students receive the most effective teaching possible. While FRHSD has wonderful teachers who combine seniority and teaching mastery, it's not possible to assume that's always the case.

Our kids are sorely deficient in the basics - reading, writing and Math. Throw in Science too. That said, it is ridiculous to eliminate positions in the English Department. If anything, more should be added. Get rid of half of that sports nonsense and you will have more than enough money for the important subjects.

Part of the reason stated is because of monetary concerns but the board is willing to risk many thousands of dollars in bringing dubious tenure charges against Mr. Simon and is unwilling to find a way to get rid of the last vestige of the Breyer St. scandal, the doodling curriculum supervisor, Donna Evangelista. What a shameful waste.

Unbelievable! The district eliminates three teaching positions, HOWEVER, they eliminate the Kuhnert Holiday Basketball Tournament, spend thousands of dollars trying to eliminate a principal via tenure charges, refuse to collect $5000.00 from sitting assistant superintendent Donna Evangelista (from phony doctorate degree fames Breyer State University)--and worse of all they refuse to rule out a pay raise for themselves! Believe me I know. When I broached this subject at the last board meeting whether or not they would consider pay raises for the highest paid administrative employees--they refused to answer.

I fully agree with Jim! The FRHSD board is filled with individuals thatl have family members in the district..NEPOTISM is rampant in this poorly run district.
All those involved in the WASSER / Evangelista fiasco should have been booted out of the district.
No one seems to care!

Mr. Grabowski has been a positive influence on my son this past year. What a loss to the district. He devotes his time to the drama club and the final product "The Wedding Singer" is a testimonial to his abilities. Mr. Grabowski is a keeper.

Mr. Grabowski has also been a positive influence on my son during his first year of high school. He looked forward everyday to going to drama club. He always spoke highly of Mr. Grabowski. There will never be anyone else to take Mr. Grabowski's place with these children and drama club will never be the same. He was loved by all of these children. What a loss to Manalapn High School.

Same Old Same Old- It's never about the quality of our children's education. Let's keep the tenured teachers regardless of their effectiveness, and let's get rid of the young, motivated, inspirational ones. A few years ago didn't they get rid of a non tenured teacher who was nominated in that same year for the prestigious "teacher of the year award." Here is an idea- Let's get rid of the ineffective teachers based on performance-just saying......

Young teachers don't have a lock on "motivation and inspiration." That's an ageist statement.

The point was "effectiveness" and how non-tenured talent, as in the case of Mr. Grabowski and Mr. Surgent (nominated for "teacher of the year" and fired in that same year) were let go because they didn't have tenure. The concept that educating our children is best served using the LIFO method doesn't make sense.

The politics in this school district is shameful. Mr. Grabowski is an excellent teacher and mentor to all his students. He doesn't deserve to be caught up in this disgraceful witch hunt for Mr. Simon. They can spin this any way they want, this time the public isn't clueless. A little media attention is what's needed here in order to throw a spotlight on this sham. Mr. G. will always be revered as the teacher who gave my son the best education and he never even had him as an English teacher. Through Drama Club he's taught so much more than could ever be taught in a classroom. The exhaustive hours he gives to so many kids after the school bell rings and everyone else has gone home should be the measure of this man's value. I wish him well and hope that he finds a job in some other district that deserves his talent, effort, and tireless dedication. The same goes for the other two teachers whose positions are no longer need. Sadly, our kids are the biggest losers here.

Roe, I feel your pain and that of the kids. I was there during the BOE meeting when I heard compelling and persuasive stories from the kids' and their experiences with Mr. G. I spoke after they all spoke.
But what bothers me, and should bother you and others--is when Mr. Sampson reccomends on the agenda pay raises for his most highly paid employees. These are the people that sit on the dais during the Board meetings. With teachers being cut; programs being cut-- not to mention my taxes being raised--this is not the correct time to discuss pay raises. This simply is not the economy to consider any raises.
As they say, "its for the kids." Yeah right!

Remember this all, save the data and bring it back into the public eye in time for the November school board elections. The reminders might have to be carried on for three years. The behavior of the board has been so outrageous in the past few years that all board members need to be replaced.

These cuts were NOT based on seniority, as stated in the article Mr G is a third year teacher at MHS & there is another teacher at the school that is only in his first year.
It it so obvious that what is happening to Mr G is related to the Simon scandal. The Board should be ashamed that they have let the admin pull the wool over their eyes & pretend that this is a legitimate RIF. FRHSD is a district. For them to do a RIF, there should be no hiring needs in the district but right now multiple schools in the district are interviewing for potential hiring needs in English in he fall. While Mr G is not entitled to a spot because he is nontenured, it is past practice in the district to transfer & fill openings from within. The fact that they're not doing everything they can to keep him after what they heard last month is disgraceful & shows that no one on the BoE or admin truly has the best interest of the kids at heart.
In addition, if anyone was at the meeting, the way it was handled was sad. Those kids got up there & poured their hearts out & not a single board member thanked them for their time, acknowledged their feelings or thought to say " Hey, maybe we should look into this a little more before we vote." They all just put their heads down & voted blindy. They did not do their due diligence to find out what is really going on here & it's sad to say that they have failed their charge. Again

If this English teacher is truly tied to the "scandel" at MHS and there can be a lateral staffing change, the English teachers - there were 2 - can be reassigned to different schools in the district. And, if the scandel was that bad, the lawyers can rename them. Do the children really care about the label of the English teacher, as long the children are taught and are properly prepared for HS graduation.
The population in this area changes on a dime, and staffing changes throughout the district used to be routine to reflect the population in the area. It seems odd that the English department is being downsized.
Regardless of the testing year, English is mandatory for graduation from any NJ HS. It's not a subject like Phys Ed or History.

In response to Claudine's reply to this post......Phys Ed (4 years) and History (3 years) are also requirements for graduation.

you get tenure AFTER 3 years...so he goes, they keep the teacher with one year, until he reaches 3, then he goes...allows the "experienced" teachers to stay (oh, wait, forgot...they cant get rid of them after 3). wanna see something really scary? go to the budget and read the salaries these poor underpaid teachers make...along with the almost free health care. as for this teacher being younger and motivated, i am sure he is...teacher burnout only comes after acheiving tenure. and it IS prevelant.

The FRHSD BOE always voted like sheep. There afraid of the lawyers who tell them not to say a word--he will do all the talking for them. They claim do to their talking in executive sessions. That is not what the people want. They want to hear their true heartfelt statements on all matters on the agenda. Did you ever notice when the superintendent "recommends" this or that, they always go along with him--no questions asked. Utterly disgraceful. On the agenda there is a slew of hirings--yet no Mr. G. I guess he is connected to Mr. Simon. Politics at its worst.

I always thought that personnel issues were supposed to be private. Don'tcha just love how Simon, the old cheer leading coach, the football coach, and the English teacher leak all this information to the kids and parents hoping that they will whine and whine and whine and then whine somemore and try to influence the outcome? The parents and the kids become unwitting pawns in something they have no knowledge or information about other than from the whiners. I wonder f this falls under child abuse. Giggle

Board members have stated they need to be replaced. Obviously they speak a good game, but their actions indicate otherwise. Their past record certainly warrants a change--don't you agree?
