Marlboro Psych Site Gets Grant to Improve Water Treatment

The site has been closed since the 90's, but its sewerage treatment facility services New Hope addiction treatment center.

The long-standing Marlboro Psychiatric facility, which was closed by the state in 1998, will now receive an infrastructure remodel.

“We’re moving in the right direction with the hospital property so that it will be a benefit to the community soon,” said Marlboro Mayor Jon Hornik. “There’s still a way to go, but this is a significant step forward.”

A $3.5 million grant through the Clean Waters bond fund will go toward sewerage improvements. According to the Department of Environmental Protection, the 411-acre property does not meet the state standards for sewerage treatment facilities.

Although the site has been closed for many years, its water facilities serve the addiction treatment center New Hope.

“This is an issue that affects all the residents of Marlboro Township,” said Assemblywoman Casagrande in a news release. “Having this funding in place puts this property one step closer to finding a new future as a useful part of the Marlboro community.”

The legislation was sponsored by Casagrande, Senator Jennifer Beck and Assemblyman Declan O’Scanlon, and signed by Gov. Chris Christie in Aug.

“Before Marlboro can take ownership of the property or before a new positive use can be found, the property must be clean and ready,” Marlboro Council President Randi Marder said, “This is one of the first necessary steps.”

The DEP closed the site in 2010 for environmental cleanup, but the former psychiatric hospital still proves to be a popular Weird NJ location for ghost hunters.  However, those found on the gated property are subject to arrest and fines for trespassing.
