Marlboro Psychiatric Hospital Cleanup Still Planned
The hospital campus will be transformed for recreational use, but it is taking time.
New Jersey that the abandoned Marlboro Psychiatric Hospital would be cleaned up and transformed into a preserved open space for recreational use, but not much at the site has happened since then. A state official has now confirmed that this is still the plan, but it is taking time to get underway.
Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno and Mayor Jon Hornik announced on November 18, 2011 that the state would clean up the 411 acre site, including demolishing 600,000 square feet of buildings, at no expense to Marlboro taxpayers. The Township will then purchase the property in 2014 (when the cleanup is projected to be complete) through open space funds, to preserve the large piece of land.
“With properties with buildings this old and with some historical significance, it’s going to take time, and no one wants to put a time frame on it,” State Department of Treasury Spokesman Andy Pratt told the Asbury Park Press this weekend.

The estimated cost of the cleanup is $27 million.
