TELL US: Beetles In Your Starbucks?

The popular coffee chain is using beetles to color its Strawberry Frappuccinos.

When you order a frothy, fruity drink from Starbucks, do you know exactly what you're drinking?

News 12 NJ reports calories may not be the only thing Starbucks patrons should be worrying about. The company recently began using beetles found in South Africa and Mexico to color its Strawberry Frappuccinos.

According to the article, "The ingredient is used in many other food products and is FDA approved."

Tell us: are you okay with beetles being used to color your drinks?

  • Would you drink a Strawberry Frappuccino after knowing Starbucks uses beetles to color it?

It was reported on FOX News NY that the food dye made up of these crushed bugs are in many more food items than the Bux's frappuccinos... Eater beware.

Yes, that's true, Natalie. The dye from crushed cochineal beetles is called "Carmine" and can be found in processed foods and cosmetics. It may be a problem for vegetarians, however!

I would imagine it would be a problem for a lot of carnivores too, LOL. Glad I stick to my chai. Although... I now wonder what might be added to the tea drink they serve...

I am vegan and use to love the strawberry fraps w/ soy. No more will I purchase them. I feel lied too. I know strawberries are more expensive, but if that is what they advertise the drink to be that is what should be in it. Not "beetleJuice". Makes me sick to think about.

Beetle juice, Beetle Juice, Beetle Juice! Nope didn't work. Oh well.... Guess I'll get another chemically filled, bug protein packed beverage elsewhere.

Are the beetles any worse than the unknown chemicals people eat daily in processed foods? Just wondering if something from nature, even beetles, is worse than genetically altered foods... I go with the beetles. I can at least pronounce the ingredient.

Have you heard about the pink slime in our cafeteria meat??? The patch posted an article. I'd prefer the bugs and natural things. BTW I accidentally flagged you as I scrolled down, soooo sorry! I'm still working out my issues

After finding out Jello also uses crushed bugs I haven't been able to eat that either. As a vegetarian, I wish food producers would indicate where meat and meat by-products are used.

......you are / were aware...that Jello...isn't 'xactly...vegetarian...right?.....with...or without the bugs?

.....are bugs now considered "meat"? Are they going to give pork a run for it's money as, "The other white meat...that unlike pigs...can actually fly". I find it incredibly amusing...that persons who are sworn to a "healthy eating style"...don't realize that the organic muffin or slice of whole grain bread you're eating....contains insect parts, pieces.....and perhaps more than a non-organic grain based baked good (due to the limited / lack of insecticide use).

....and...what I find to be the most amusing...is that Starbuck's made a conscious effort to make its Strawberry Foo-Foo-ccino...'more red'....instead of striving to make a cup of coffee that actually tastes good.

.....regarding the poll (above)...it should really be asking the question: Would you drink a Starbuck's Foo-Foo-ccino if you actually knew that it has 560 Calories.....144 of those calories from fat... and also 20% of your recommended daily sodium and sugar allowance?

What all of this really means is that, as consumers, we really have to be more vigilant about finding out what are the "hidden ingredients" in our food chain. Someone wrote about strawberry frappes....Regular strawberries have more pesticide sprays which stays on the fruit than most other foods. If you really want to eat strawberries, you should buy organic. They are reasonably priced in Wegmans (and don't contain pink slime). Mr. Romano is correct in pointing out the high calories, sugar and sodium content in many of the prepared foods that are offered. There is an obvious reason why this country is facing a very serious health emergency from the rise in obesity. With all the information available, too many people just don't seem to care enough to make smarter choices about the foods they eat. It's no wonder we have the problem we do with our health insurance industry. So many of the illnesses that are driving people to their doctors are weight based. Think of how much money people can save on medical bills if they spend a little more on more nutritious food and exercise.

That is a huge problem... Not all people care enough about themselves or their children to make a healthier change. It is too difficult to count calories or make a home cooked meal that is not processed. We live in a microwave generation and people want it NOW! If they only understood that if it is not something they can find in it's natural state or take more than 20 minutes to make, it is processed and contains some kind of chemical (or bugs in this case) to make it more pleasing to the pallet or tasty to the eyes. Most illnesses come from too many additives put into the body unnaturally and they willingly take more chemicals to try and get better! It's a lose lose situation. But unless your willing to make a change, it doesn't matter. SO LET THEM EAT BUGS! err...um...drink.....

....so following your line of thought is that they take the easy way out for themselves and depend on the health system to try and bail them out (at who's cost?). It creates the same problem that "Obamacare" is attempting to solve with the mandate for those that don't have health insurance but will eventually need it. Those who are against it want everyone else to pay for their medical bills rather than take their own responsibitly. The people you are describing are foolishly and selfishly subjecting their own families to the same unhealthy life styles they are living themselves. It really is a shame. They rely on unreliable medicines to cure what, in most cases, can be resolved by healthier eating habits....and save alot of money in the long run...So continue drinking all those cokes and eating all those heavily sweetened cookies, cakes and cereals and then paying all those dentist bills and doctor visits...and then complain about health costs.

That is exactly what I'm talking about. It is a shame that 85% of issues and 100% of our money spent at a gym and the doctors could be resolved with just plain self control! But that takes too much effort. So we who choose to do what is evidently healthier and better for us, suffer the ill fate of rising healthcare cost and outrageous doctor bills. Next thing you know, some dingbat will claim these beetles cured my migraines and the whole dang world will be drinking Starbucks again! What can you do?

....guess you can't get any more organic than that? All we need now is a cameo appearance in a Starbuck's commercial by Charlton Heston (if he weren't dead already)...with him...Strawberry Foo-Foo-ccino in one hand...raised high above his head...screaming at the top of his lungs, "Starbuck's Foo-foo-ccino...is Beetles"!!

What about the dyes in vitamin supplements? I looked at the ingredients on an ocuvite
bottle and discovered the vitamins contain red, blue, yellow and other artificial coloring. Colors are added to make food, medicines, vitamins, etc. more appealing to the consumer. it's amazing what one finds when reading the very small print on items we purchase. We shouldn't be taken in with pretty pictures, bright colors in food ads. Even some cola companies are experimenting with different coloring to draw the public in...We're smarter than that-hopefully!!

Yeah... I gotta agree with CG. Everyone knows what hot dogs consist of and they still eat them! Pork, shrimp and crab are nasty little bottom feeders, yet we put 'em on a platter and call them delicacies. If you can't say it, you shouldn't eat it, and if you know what it eats already, know you are eating it too!
