The latest addition to the Freehold Raceway Mall arrived on Wednesday morning when Bobby Flay opened his newest Bobby's Burger Palace.

The restaurant offers wide variety of options including his well known hamburgers, sandwiches and sides, and there was a crowd waiting to try the food and meet the Iron Chef himself.

The business opening had a charitable beginning: $1 of the purchase price of every burger sold during the first week of operation will go to The Foodbank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties.

My spouse and I were going to Flay's new restaurant. We picked up a menu earlier in the day. It was limited and expensive and would have easily been $30 (sans tip) just for a burger, fries and a drink. Thirty dollars for a burger? We went to All Seasons Diner instead. For $31 and change, we got chicken/shrimp/sausage jumblaya (excellent), salad bar, drink and a dessert, again all were excellent. The service was also very good. Additionally, the portions were so large that we took home the leftovers and had them for lunch. Personally, I think ALL chain restaurants are over rated and expensive. How is the All Seasons Diner a "community establishment" and Bobby's not? Is it because Bobby himself does not work at the establishment? What about all the workers at the Burger Palace? Are they not from our community?

Maybe there is a difference between the quality of the food at Bobby's and the All Seasons diner? Perhaps the All Seasons Diner should donate a potion of their profits for the week to the community?

I'm glad that you think that ALL chain restaurants are over rated and expensive. Perhaps you should get off your soap box for a few minutes and acknowledge that these places provide a function in the market - jobs - different variety of foods.

So are you saying that 2 hamburgers - fries and drinks would have been 31 dollars? The way you wrote your advertisement - it sounded like 1 hamburger - fries and a drink would have been 31 dollars. It's counter service - not a restaurant - so based on my experience with the one at the Monmouth Mall - I just leave a buck per person on the counter when I leave.

You forgot to add the tip to your commercial for the All Seasons Diner...

Support my community establishments? Ok.....

Oh for heaven's sake, you absolutely know the difference between a chain and an independent establishment. Chains take over local business. For example, Walmart/Lowes/Home Depot vs. your local hardware store. Local establishments take the time to know you, offer suggestions and at least in my mind try to save you money - not like big box stores. The other day my husband went to our local hardware store to buy masking tape. The owner asked my husband what he was using the tape for. The propriotor changed the tape for a less expensive one because he did not need the more expensive tape. Like you would really get that type of caring by Mr. Big Business, right KC?

I wanted to try Burger Palace but when I saw the offerings/price I didn't feel it was worth it. I only go to All Seasons occasionally so my comments can't be construed as a commercial. I do however, understand value and healthy food. By the way, I like Bobby Flay. I watch his shows. But I think his Burger restaurant holds no value or healthy choices. I've also talked to others who went to his Monmouth Mall store and they agree with me. They also added that the food stinks which I never said. Looks like I saved myself money and a stomach ache.

Just wanted to add one more thing...

So basically you never even tried the food at the Burger Palace and you want to post your commercial for the All Seasons Diner instead - because Bobby's was "limited"? How exactly is it limited? They have about 10 different hamburgers, multiple toppings, salads, shakes, 2 kinds of fries and children's meals?

So you wanted Jumblaya instead of hamburgers - but for some reason Bobby's burger palace does not sell Jumblaya - so they are limited...

I'm sure the All Seasons Diner does not sell caviar - but I don't hold it against them...

I have tried the Burger Palace and ordered the Dallas Burger- Spice Crusted / Coleslaw / Monterey Jack /
BBQ Sauce / Pickles
well needless to say none of it had any taste.the burger was bland.there was hardley any coleslaw on it a tiny slice of cheese. BBQ suace??? where wasnt on mine. oh and spice crusted, also missing. it was more roll than burger. My friend got a rare burger and when i tell you rare it was so damn raw it fell apart in her hands and was dripping blood!!! gross!!! we ordered to go so we could not complanin. we just will not be going back there again, and this was in the monmouth mall location.

I'll take your word for it - you and your friend had bad burgers. The majority of people on Yelp seem to like them - the majority of the reviews are 5 stars.

http://www.yelp.com/biz/bobbys-burger-palace-eatontown

Some quotes:

"The burger, however, WAS AWESOME!!! I couldn't believe how juicy and perfectly cooked the burger was, had I eaten just the beef itself I would have been happy. The mound of cheese, crunchy onions, and hot peppers (which had a nice kick but weren't overpowering) simply enhanced was was already a delicious burger. I poured on some hot sauce as well for added kick and to have some kind of sauce, but really it would have probably been just as good without it (I ended up not even using the mustard lol)."

"Can't say enough good things about this place. It's one of the best burgers around. We have tried the entire menu and have not been disappointed. We also have had almost every burger of the month and they are great as well. Will continue to go back and also recommend to all."

Sounds like you should give it another try... I have never had a bad experience and anytime there was anything that was not 110% up to my satisifaction - they exchanged it for another product.

yea i know alot of people in my office raved about it so when i did go i was very dissapointed so i will be reluctant to try again but i will one day im sure.I feel the same way about the other burger chains too though like 5 guys i just feel like they charge way too much for burgers that are just ok.. when i want a good burger i usually splurge at the supermarket for some real good beef and make my own gourmet burger. so good.

Regarding 5 Guys - I agree. I was going to the one in Eatontown for about six months and it was terrible. I ended up stopping at the one near the Costco off Route 18 - near 33/66 and it was crazy good. I thought it was a fluke - so I went back to that particular 5 guys - I get it now. I was not getting it from the other place - it was super dry and I never enjoyed it...

You would think they would be consistent....

I would try it again - you might have had an off day. I would also say something to them if something is not right. One time I was at Bobby's and the fries were all 1/4 inch long - like it was the end of the basket - I said something and they brought me new fries.. Simple enough - I was annoyed by it - but they did the right thing....

Wow! Great range in comments. Did anyone consider yesterday could have been grand opening jitters? Did you comment to Bobby Flay or a Manager that you were unhappy with your order? And the take-out order, why not complain? I have been shorted, given the wrong meal, given a lousy meal @ McD's, KFC, local Chinese, & local pizzeria, but I refuse to waste my money. I call. I call when I open my order, or eat the food, or I call the next day, & I ALWAYS get satisfaction. Twice I've gotten a take out burger order where everything was there BUT the burger.
I really wanted to comment on the coverage, wonderful job you guys! And was this a milestone, or have you put video feed in before & I just missed it? Glad I follow!

I have been to other famous-named restauranteur places like Emeril's in New Orleans, Puck's in Vegas and the like and have found the following with these places: prices are high, portions are small (but presentations are beautiful), food is tasty, and the service is great. I have never been to Flay's, but this has to be very similar. If you are into this, fine. If not, there are other choices.

we tried his spot in Eatontown and will probably never go back. the food was ok, but (in our opinion) overpriced and the portions were small. the service wasn't bad but nothing to crow over either. in short, we weren't too enthusiastic about it.

a) Saying that all the choices at Bobby's are not healthy is not a factual statement - it's clearly an opinion. They have turkey and veggie burger options - along with salads - along with water. It's as healthy as you want it to be.

b) Claiming that you are getting better service at the local hardware store makes it sound like the only reason people shop at Home Depot is price. If that was the case - they would be selling box goods only. They seem to offer installation services and other value adds that the local guy does not offer. My wife went to pickup a snow shovel from Beckers Hardware on 34 - they are not friendly - they don't take Amex and they charged double of what I could get the exact same shovel for.

c) As you never ate at the place and are only going on qualifications that your friends gave you - you really can't talk about the place - or even have an opinion except to say that you heard that it was bad. I heard that skydiving is fun - so I'll never have to do it because my friends did it and they LOVED it...

I don't need to eat at a place to know bad food when I see the menu. By the way, id you know that turkry burgers have just as much fat, if not more, than a regular beef burger? Veggie burger? I'd rather go hungry.

Regarding your local hardware store, seems like you have a problem picking good restaurants AND hardware stores.

Enjoy your visit to the Burger Palace.

I'm not trying to be difficult either - I just think that these generalizations hurt everyone in the long run.

Establishments are made up of people. In many cases the products are the same - in hardware - that shovel might come from the same factory and end up in both the chain and the local "mom & pop". Some people might want to pay more for the same shovel - and have less options on payment (e.g. not being able to use my Amex card) - considering that they are "supporting" a local business. But with that said - based on the fact that KMART/WALMART/BJs/COSTCO - are offering better pricing in many cases - with superior service means that people will vote with their dollars and shop there.

As far as acknowledging that chains are bad - the majority of people seem to get their coffee at either starbucks or DD - I prefer something else - it does not mean that the people who are buying the coffee at either of those places are causing the local bagel shop to go out of business. It could be because the local bagel shop has terrible coffee - charges more - is out of the way in a less expensive or less convenient location.

I'm just saying that it's not an easy or cut and dry issue. As I mentioned above - local people work in these places. If you look at the salaries for someone at a DD or Starbucks - I bet they are more than the local bagel store as well - and in some cases (e.g. Costco - are superior and provide benefits...)

As far as getting good information from people that work in chains - I have found that the information varies - just like the people themselves. Apple seems to be able to provide excellent service at the mall. I walk to 10 other stores in the mall - and never get anywhere near that level of service (The Microsoft store is close).

There were 100s of small independent computer dealers - they all went out of business when people started buying direct from Dell and catalogs - prior to the internet. Now people order from Amazon - does that mean they are hurting the small business owner. In many cases - no - since the order is being fulfilled from Amazon but actually sold by a small 3rd party...

We can go back and forth on this all day - the point was that I felt that it was unfair to Bobby and the establishment to complain about a place or the value of the place based on never ordering a single thing - except to say that they might have been expensive. I don't eat at Le Cirque - but you won't hear me saying that the local diner is a better value or has better food - because I can't make an honest comparison...

I do understand what you were getting at - but I think it does a disservice to the people who work there - and Bobby himself who invested money into our area to bring jobs and choices for us. Yes - we have the diner as well - but people can frequent both on alternating weeks and make everyone happy.

I don't have a problem picking anything - neither hardware stores or restaurants. I appreciate your opinion.....

I don't eat Turkey burgers - or Veggie burgers - but some people might consider either of them healthier than beef. I'm not sure if the fat in the particular turkey burgers is more than their beef - it's not a decision that I'm really making.

Anything in moderation is fine - that goes for beef, wine, ice cream, etc.

It's a dead end game for vast majority and in the end it's gonna be pot luck who actually survives it if any, not to mention it's gonna be a living hell for the few survivors. Yes we need heroes or role models, but i don't see too many of them being worshipped. It's all pop, movie and ball stars we are looking up to. Good luck. Now I really regret typing the above about you rambling. It's clear you are just crazy and loves to quote all kinds of crazy stuff..

I heard that the end of the world is coming soon - you want to get on your soap box and talk about that?

a) Who is giving our collective power/money to a chosen few?
b) Are you saying that it's a dead end game for the vast majority - and a living hell for the few survivors?
c) So you are saying that our role models are pop, movie and ball stars?

You don't sound negative to me..

So I'm going to try to better understand what you are saying..

So you believe that the 1% - the free masons are controlling our society. They are using the old Roman - bread and circus method to control us. Give us a few food ball games, a few movie stars - some war that we can watch on TV and we are all happy. Then they use the press (which they control) to broadcast images of superficial false idols to occupy us so we don't notice their plans. Yes - pretty soon - the meek are going to inherit everything...

Gotcha - you are crazy....

Hamburgers - remember - this is about hamburgers.....

The one in Freehold is the second Bobby's Burger Palace I went and I will not come back again to any of his restaurants. Our order was all messed up. I ordered my burger well done, but I got a pink bloody burger. My daughters was over cooked and dried. Our mango milkshake tasted like banana. The portions are tiny small, and expensive. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE.
