Some Ways to Help in Monmouth County after Hurricane Sandy

So many are still in need. There are many opportunities to lend a hand.

Almost two weeks after Hurricane Sandy, and just days after a nor'easter hit Monmouth County, families still find themselves in need.

We've seen the images of destruction, and the images of hope. So many residents have already dedicated their money and time to rebuildng towns such as Union Beach and Keyport, but there is still more to be done.

Here are some ways you can help:

Volunteer

Beacon of Hope Center, Hazlet: The formerly vacant Childrens Wear storefront has been taken over and dubbed "The Beacon of Hope" by the Northern Monmouth Chamber of Commerce by its members, who are behind it. Call 732-737-1836 or 732-740-3551 for information or questions. Connect to the NMCC Beacon of Hope to learn what the volunteers need now.

The Monmouth County Broom and Brew is collecting holiday gifts for local kids affected by the storm. We are working with administrations from the Matawan-Aberdeen and Keansburg school districts, and with a group accepting gifts for Union Beach - everything will get distributed directly back into our own community.

We are currently accepting new (unwrapped) toys, books for all ages, winter hats, scarves and mittens/gloves. Email broomandbrew@gmail.com for details on how to donate.

Monetary donations can also be made at http://gogetfunding.com/project/holiday-drive-for-kids-affected-by-hurricane-sandy

100% of the donation amounts (minus the small site fees) will be used to purchase gifts from the wish lists we'll be receiving for the kids.

We will also be having a donation drive at which you can pick a child's wish list from our Giving Tree on Dec. 9 at the Plainsboro Center for Relation and Healing (more details to come).
