Hobby Lobby Opens To Eager Customers In Marlboro

Hobby Lobby filled the empty Pathmark location on Route 9.

Hobby Lobby opened in Marlboro Plaza on July 8, to a line of eager shoppers.

The craft and DIY store is filling the empty Pathmark site on Route 9, and sells seasonal items as well. Christmas, Thanksgiving and Halloween displays are already set up.

"There's a lot of history in this shopping center," Mayor Jon Hornik said at the grand opening ceremony. "I grew up here, and we didn't become a town until that McDonald's was built and this shopping center was built."

Independent class instructors are encouraged to apply in person once the store is open. Hobby Lobby classes include jewelry making, knitting, floral design, papercrafting, and more.

Hobby Lobby is an arts and crafts chain controlled by billionaire David Green and family in Oklahoma City with 13,000 employees and 525 big-box stores in the United States as of March, 2013. It is the third location to open in New Jersey. The other two stores are in South Plainfield and Millville. Store hours are Monday through Saturday, 9am to 8pm and they are closed on Sunday, according to their corporate website.

The company also runs Mardel, a large chain of Christian bookstores. The company is challenging a requirement in President Barack Obama's revised healthcare legislation that some companies must give insurance coverage for contraception drugs and devices.  In December, Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor refused to block the mandate. The company was told it could continue its challenge in lower courts.
