Hornik asks Marlboro residents to be patient

Hurricane Irene caused trees to block roads, power lines in the streets and structural damage to houses.

struck New Jersey on Aug. 27, and its force has become a reality. Marlboro streets are lined with debris, and Route 520 is closed in one part due to a large tree tangled with power lines.

Flooding is apparent on many roads, including Tennant Road, and residents woke up Sunday morning to front yards becoming lakes and damage to landscaping and structure.

Sunday morning, a home on Nolan Road in Morganville had a partial collapse of its first floor into the basement.

Hornik said the electric company is working hard throughout the township, but has informed him that full power restoration may take "not hours, but days."

Hornik's home is without power, as are the homes of all township council.

"Remain very patient," Hornik said. "This storm was catastrophic."

As of now, the fire department is not assisting homeowners to pump water out of homes, but Hornik said that has been done in the past is a possibility. As of now, the township is using the department's resources elsewhere.

Officials are assessing damage as calls come in, and blocking roads in order to get power companies through to fix wires. It is recommended that residents continue to stay off the roads as much as possible, allowing township crews and electrical crews through.

Hornik said, "Road closures will remain sporadic until we can clean up the trees."

With storm-related questions, residents can reach the Marlboro Office of Emergency Management through the police command center at 732-536-0100.

Hornik continues to post updates on the township website.

Patch will update as more information comes in.
