Marlboro Students Give Back to Victims of Sandy

Each school in the Marlboro K-8 District has given back to those in need after Hurricane Sandy.

After Hurricane Sandy rocked Marlboro Township, residents began to look around at towns just miles away, suddenly thankful for for being spared.

Marlboro elementary and middle school students and teachers took the opportunity to give back, collecting goods and volunteering where needed.

The following schools donated time and goods to the victims of Hurricane Sandy:

Marlboro Early Learning Center

  • Donation to FoodBank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties
  • Pennies for PTO proceeds also will be donated to the FoodBank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties

Asher Holmes Elementary School

  • Adopted Port Monmouth Elementary School, Middletown – donated school supplies

Defino Central Elementary School

  • Defino Rescue Fund created to assist two DC teachers affected by the storm ($550 collected)
  • Jeans for Troops Day raised $275 for GI Go Fund which supports NJ National Guard and reservists first responders to Hurricane Sandy

PTA

  • Collected food and monetary donations to replenish Project PAUL’s food pantry which was destroyed during the storm
  • Started a monetary donation drive for two DC teachers affected by the storm

Dugan Elementary School

  • Donation to FoodBank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties

Marlboro Elementary School

  • Donation to FoodBank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties
  • Set up a committee with staff and PTO representatives to begin researching where the needs are locally i.e., Union Beach, Belmar, Highlands, etc. and address how to best respond
  • Toy collection by staff for Belmar Elementary School students
  • Coin collection through the PTO to purchase gift cards for families affected in Union Beach, Belmar, and possibly Highlands

Robertsville Elementary School

  • Penny Drive – collecting change at each grade level to help victims of Hurricane Sandy that the PTO will match dollar for dollar, to be donated to the FoodBank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties
  • PTO donated to the FoodBank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties on behalf of its teachers, in lieu of the annual teacher appreciation tokens of thanks for Thanksgiving
  • Letter/note drive for the teachers and families of Union Beach school district to show support

Marlboro Middle School

  • Adopted Port Monmouth Elementary School, Middletown – donated supplies
  • Increased Thanksgiving and holiday food baskets for families in need

Marlboro Memorial Middle School

  • Adopted MAST HS – PTA concert; monetary donations and school supplies
  • Adopted Highland Elementary School – donated supplies

Marlboro Township Education Association

  • Adopted Bay Head school

School nurses Kathleen Bessinger, Karen Kahn, and Nancy Triozzi also worked at the Monmouth University shelter during the storm.
