Navy veteran and Marlboro resident William Waple received thanks from Mayor Jon Hornik.

Box Built and Donated by Veteran and Resident William Waple

A bin to dispose of American Flags that are damaged or no longer in service has been donated to the Township of Marlboro by William Waple.  The bin is placed permanently in the lobby of Marlboro Town Hall and is accessible during normal business hours.   The flags will be properly disposed of in a public ceremony on Flag Day, June 14th, each year.

Mayor Jonathan Hornik said, “Mr. Waple saw a need in the community and contacted the Veterans and Volunteers Committee, Chief of Police Bruce Hall and my office.  He designed and built the bin by hand and, on behalf of Marlboro Township, I thank Bill for his commitment in ensuring that the United States flag is treated with respect as a living symbol of the freedoms we all enjoy as American Citizens.”

William Waple enlisted in the United States Navy in 1959 and was honorably discharged as Seamen 1st Class in 1961 before moving to Marlboro in 1983. He and his wife Carol have been residents ever since.  During that time, Bill has been a member of the Veterans and Volunteers Committee and was an integral part of planning the first Marlboro Memorial Day Parade as well as taking an active role in the building and planting of the Memorial Garden located outside of Town Hall.  Currently, Mr. Waple serves on the Historical Committee having been appointed by Mayor Hornik in 2014.

“People proudly display the American Flag, but they do not know what to do when the flag has become damaged,” said Bill Waple.  “By placing this bin in the lobby of Town Hall, it is my hope that homeowners, schools, and businesses will place their unwanted US flags in the bin and allow them to be properly disposed of as per the Federal Flag Code.”

Public Law 94-344, known as the Federal Flag Code, contains rules for handling and displaying the U.S. flag. It states, that the flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.
