Marlboro Acquires Salt From Binghamton, NY

Mayor Jon Hornik reached out to Binghamton's mayor to help with the town's dwindling rock salt supply.

Marlboro's rock salt supply received a boost from Binghamton, NY.

Several weeks ago, Mayor Jonathan Hornik reached out to Binghamton Mayor Richard David for assistance with the town's supply taking a hit from the difficult winter.

"This has been a particularly brutal winter, and the shortage of rock salt in New Jersey has been well publicized," Hornik said in a press release. "It had reached a critical point, and some communities had already begun closing down roads."

Marlboro still had some rock salt, but with the supply dwindling and contract vendors still unable to commit to deliveries, Hornik and Department of Public Works officials grew increasingly concerned.

"I was just not comfortable operating with so little supply in reserve. The winter did not appear to be letting up any time soon and we were intent on exhausting every possible option. Upstate New York communities seem to deal with this type of weather all of the time. I reached out to Mayor Richard David of the City of Binghamton for assistance and I am grateful that he was able to lend a hand," Hornik said in the press release.

Marlboro Department of Public Works is responsible for approximately 200 miles of roadways. The town typically utilizes in excess of 400 tons in just a single snow or ice event.  Marlboro sent trucks on four separate days north and west to pick up a total approximately 530 tons of rock salt from the Binghamton, substantially reinforcing existing reserves.

"I know what it’s like to be mayor of a municipality with a low supply of salt dealing with an upcoming snowstorm,” David said. "Because of proactive planning, Binghamton was able to offer assistance to Marlboro while not impairing our ability to respond to any local snow emergencies or take manpower away from snow removal efforts."
