Marlboro Named Among Safest Towns in New Jersey

Safewise, a home security website, recently named Marlboro among the 50 safest communities in New Jersey.

There are lots of words used to describe Marlboro, and now residents can add another: safe.

That's the determination of Safewise, a home security website that recently compiled a list of New Jersey's 50 safest communities—including no. 28, Marlboro.

“If you want your teen to be surrounded by a positive peer group, you may have just found your new home. Optimistic, forward thinking and unquestionably impressive, Marlboro is a community that focuses on developing the leaders of tomorrow and growing the businesses of today,” the article states.

SafeWise came up with this list after pairing data from the FBI’s 2011 Crime in the U.S. Report with it’s own research. The result is a list of the top 50 safest communities in New Jersey, with 15,000 residents or more as of 2011.

Marlboro Mayor Jon Hornik agreed with the report’s findings and said he isn’t surprised.

“I think Marlboro is just a great place to live,” he said. “It’s a nice community where residents know each other, take care of each other, have the same values, take care of the education of children, and the seniors and work together to produce the best community in the state.”

SafeWise noted the township’s aggressive programs to assist and promote local business and economic development

“And Marlboro takes a proactive approach to keeping resident dollars close to home with its innovative Shop Marlboro program that provides property tax incentives for Marlboro residents to keep their purchasing dollars in the community,” said the article.

While the report doesn’t mention crime, Mayor Hornik said the police department is among the best around, and just one of many aspects that make the township a great place to live.

“Our officers are vested in the town,” he said. “Many were born and raised here. They’re not just doing a job, they’re protecting a community they truly care about.”

Fire and first aid, recreational programs, volunteers, and community members all contribute to what makes the towns special, said Mayor Hornik.

“I don’t need any poll or any kind of survey to tell me how great Marlboro is. It’s flattering to see in writing, but as s member of the community, you just know it.”
