Portion of the Henry Hudson Trail Remains Closed

Contaminates have the trail closed between Matawan and Marlboro until the end of the year for environmental cleanup

A segment of The Henry Hudson Trail has been closed since May for an environmental cleanup, which is expected to finish by the end of the year.

Monmouth County Parks Public Information Officer, Karen Linvingstone, said the cleanup began when contaminated soil was found near the stretch of trail between Marlboro and Matawan.

“There were 200,000 tons of contaminate soil from Texas Road to Greenwood Road,” Linvingstone said.

Livingstone said there is no immediate danger to hikers on the trail.

“Sometimes we acquire property and then we find out there may have been a leaky tank somewhere, and we just go in and clean it up,” she said.

The parks system is also replacing vegetation that may be destroyed during the cleanup process, as well as adding new plants.

“The cleanup is moving along on schedule and everything is going smoothly,” Livingstone said.
