President Carter: Christie Has Been an Effective Governor
"We're all Americans, and they are responsible in Washington for resolving those problems," Carter said.
Former President Jimmy Carter said he thinks Gov. Chris Christie served the people well in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy.
"I think he's been a very effective governor in taking care of New Jersey's great deficit, whether he inherited it, and also taking care of the people who were injured during the hurricane."
Carter and his wife Rosalynn Carter were in Union Beach on Saturday, joining volunteers from Habitat for Humanity to life and rebuild homes in the storm-ravaged town.
"I was filled with admiration for what [Christie] did, not only helping within New Jersey but his influence in making sure that the Congress didn't continue to deprive the people whose homes were destroyed of repair assistance."
Carter said Habitat for Humanity is an organization that "breaks down barriers," and he believes that's how Congress should be operating during this government shut down.
"We're all Americans, and they are responsible in Washington for resolving those problems. And I believe that in the next few weeks they will do so."
