Seeds for Community Garden Planted by Marlboro Township Committees

A plot next to the Morganville Volunteer Fire Department on Tennent Road is officially preserved forever as open space, and will house a Community Garden.

The idea began in 2011 with an idea from Councilwoman Randi Marder to bring the community together.

And now, Marlboro Township will benefit from a Community Garden on Tennent Road.

"The Shade Tree committee has been enthusiastic about the community garden since we first discussed it two years ago," said Marder in a news release. "The Open Space Committee has embraced the idea as well and the two groups have agreed to work together to make this vision a reality."

A plot next to the Morganville Volunteer Fire Department on Tennent Road is officially preserved forever as open space in May, and will soon house Marlboro's new garden.

The townships hopes to be aided by a Community Stewardship Incentive Program grant from the NJDEP, and plans to begin gardening next spring.

“The Shade Tree Committee's 3 year vision is to have a garden that produces enough produce to donate to local food banks. This space can accommodate a vegetable garden as well as an arboretum," said Shade Tree Committee Chairman Jeffrey Weiss.

Over time, the Open Space and Shade Tree Committees hope to create picnic areas and cut flower gardens on the property.

Mayor Jon Hornik said, "A community garden provides opportunities for camaraderie and exercise while beautifying the land and growing fresh produce to take home to your families. This is a new initiative for Marlboro and I am looking forward to seeing our gardens grow."
