Snow removal costs redeemed through FEMA

Marlboro receives $270,000 from federal aid to help with 2010 emergency snow removal costs

Marlboro received $270,000 from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to help alleviate snow removal costs for the township.

“We’ve pursued every option the Town has to keep local costs down for the taxpayers,” Mayor Jon Hornik said in a news release. “The July heat didn’t mean we forgot about the costs of winter.”

In December, New Jersey called a state of emergency due to heavy snow across the state. Marlboro spent $370,000 in snow removal costs, an emergency decision approved by town council.

“That was a direct hit on the bottom line for us in terms of taxes,” Hornik said at a July council meeting.

Department of Transportation officials reported that the state spent more than $44.4 million on snow removal and emergency management during the 2010-2011 winter, about double the budget that the state allotted.

“Our residents count on the roadways being clear and safe. I am pleased the taxpayers of Marlboro are being reimbursed for some of the costs of this historic storm,” Hornik said.
