FRHSD BOE Approves Revised Grading Policy, Class Ranking

Freehold Regional High School Board of Education approved revisions to their policies involving class rank and grading during the board’s regularly scheduled meeting Monday.

These policies go into effect for the upcoming academic year including major changes to student classification and rank reporting.

Class Rank

For the class of 2014, 2015 and 2016, students will be ranked in two categories, Learning Center Pupils and Non Learning Center Pupils. Beginning with the class of 2017, students will be ranked in one system and reported using a decile system.

A decile system is one in which one is the highest or top 10-percent while 10 is the lowest with the one hundred percent. For example, if a student is in the second decile, then the student is in the top 20 percent of their class.

Each student’s decile rank will be reported to colleges and universities to facilitate the college application process. Exact numeric rankings will also be available to students and guardians but not automatically reported.

Starting with the class of 2017, students will have the option of deciding whether to include their decile rank on their transcripts. Previously students had the option of deciding whether to include their class rank on their transcript.

Grading Policy

Withdrawal will be an indication of withdrawal of credit under specific circumstances

Starting with the graduating class of 2017, the weighting for Advanced Placement coursework will be increased above the honors’ course weighting. With an A+ in an Advanced Placement course equating to a 6.1 G.P.A. while, an A will equate to a 5.8 and an A- a 5.1, decreasing by one-third of a point thereafter.
