Marlboro Schools Win Holiday Hunger Challenge

Two Marlboro school were declared the winners of the 2011 Hunger Challenge.

The Foodbank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties named two Marlboro schools as the winners of the 2011 Holiday Hunger Challenge.

and the participated in the challenger, collecting food for the dual-county foodbank over the past few months.

Marlboro Memorial was awarded the School Spirit of Giving Award, which "recognizes schools that display an extraordinary degree of spirit, commitment and enthusiasm and by so doing become leaders in the cause of fighting hunger," according to a news release.

Marlboro Early Learning Center won first place for collecting the most food per student. The school also won Phillip N. Connelly Spirit of Giving Award, named after one 9-year old who decided to take his gift of $1,000 and donate it to both the foodbank and the Red Cross in 2005. The young boy tragically died in a car accident in 2009.

The mission of the Foodbank is to alleviate hunger and build food security in Monmouth and Ocean Counties.
