Overnight Camp Ground Opens in Sandy Hook

Eight camp sites will be open weekdays throughout August, with more sites expected by September.

Campers pitched their tents in the Horseshoe Cove area of Sandy Hook earlier this week as the Gateway National Recreation Area at Sandy Hook opened its campsite.

The Gateway National Recreation Area will have eight campsites available for rent during the weekdays during August with about 20 additional sites by next month, said a Gateway NRA spokesman John Warren.

“National parks and overnight camping go hand in hand,” said Superintendent Linda Canzanelli in a news release. “It’s one of the best ways to experience the natural, recreational and historic treasures that Sandy Hook has to offer. If you’ve never seen the sun rise over Sandy Hook’s ocean-side beaches or Horseshoe Cove at sunset, you really ought to try it.”

The site, which will be open weekdays in September and October, includes picnic tables, fire pits and grills.

One tent site complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act for wheelchair accessibility, according to the release.

The new campground sites include picnic tables, fire pits, grills and restrooms. Park rangers with camping experience will assist visitors who may be new to camping, according to the release.

Overnight campers may not bring pets or alcohol to any overnight campgrounds at Sandy Hook, and camping is limited to primitive tents not RVs.

Campers must bring their own tents because there are no tent rentals available.

Visitors can reserve up to four consecutive days at a campsite with each day costing $20. Reservations must be made online at www.recreation.gov. Visitors can also call (732) 872-5916 with questions about the campsite, but not to make reservations.
