Marlboro Students Lead Teen Driving Summit

The Marlboro High School chapter of Students Against Destructive Decisions was key in leading the teen driving summit this year.

The annual presented by the NJ Teen Safe Driving Coalition will featured a teen-led workshop by the Students Against Destructive Decisions this year.

The event commemorated Global Youth Traffic Safety Month, raising awareness for everything from distracted driving to driving under the influence. The Marlboro High School SADD club led a class focused on the dangers of driving at night.

According to a new release, "Car crashes are the number one cause of teen (16-20 years of age) death in New Jersey and a teen driver crashes every 10 minutes in the state. Under NJ’s GDL program, a probationary license holder may not drive between 11:01 p.m. and 5 a.m. Compliance with this provision is critical since a teen driver’s crash risk increases significantly after 9 p.m."

Chapter members Carmine Gallo, Jamie Kleiner, Elif Anda, and Dani Wolff also demonstrated the dangers of texting while driving to parents and teens by having members of the class attempt to text while steering a golf cart.

“No other age group on the road has a higher crash risk and nothing kills more teens than car crashes,” said Pam Fischer, Coalition Leader. “But we have a tool, graduated driver licensing or GDL, that families can leverage to address the problem."
