Outgoing university president Paul Gaffney delivers Commencement address

The Monmouth University Class of 2013 took center stage today as PNC Bank Arts Center hosted the university's 82nd commencement ceremony on Wednesday. If the students took center stage, Monmouth University President Paul G. Gaffney II, who is retiring after a 10-year tenure at the helm of the school, was a close second. Gaffney addressed the graduates and delivered the commencement address. "I wish you fair winds, a following sea, a tall ship and bright star to steer by," Gaffney said.

Marlboro Fourth Grader Wins National Writing Competition

Suhani Balachandran won the McGraw-Hill writing contest, as the only New Jersey finalist.

Marlboro has yet another successful student to congratulate. Suhani Balachandran, a fourth grader at Defino Elementary School, won the national McGraw-Hill writing contest in the fourth-sixth grade adventure category for her story, “A Night to Remember.” According to a district news release, "her prize package includes: SRA Reading Labs 2.0 class set for a full year, an iPad for classroom use, Specific Skills Series for Language Arts, and Classroom set of Wonders, for an approximate total prize value of $5,116. In addition, Suhani’s writing passage will be featured in SRA Reading Laboratory 2.0." Balachandran's essay went through a public voting process, which her father Bala posted on Patch. Marlboro Students Win Honorable Mention in Toshiba Science Competition

Two teams from Marlboro Middle School were awarded Honorable Mention in the Toshiba/NSTA ExploraVision program, the world’s largest K-12 science and technology competition.

Ethics Charges Filed Against Marlboro Board of Ed Vice President

Josh Pollak filed a complaint against Victoria Dean with the State Department of Education on April 23.

The NJ School Ethics Commission has officially acknowledged the receipt of ethic charges filed against Board Vice President Victoria Dean, according to complaint documents. The complaint was submitted by Marlboro resident and Planning Board member Josh Pollak who claims Dean donated an iPad at a February Knights of Columbus fundraiser which was allegedly labeled "Marlboro Republican Club, Victoria Dean, Vice President of Marlboro School Board." Pollak alleges Dean used a political standing in conjunction with her position on the board, which would violate local and state school board ethics standards. It was an idea born of panic, but one that may win a Colts Neck High School junior a $1,000 grand prize from billionaire Warren Buffett in a national competition. Alexis Pollitto, 16, will be on her way to Omaha, Neb., on Sunday for a Monday audience with the billionaire tycoon as one of five finalists in Buffett’s “Grow Your Own Business’’ competition. The national competition encourages kids to come up with new business ideas. Alexis, whose idea for a new kind of swimming pool monitoring system made it through the first rounds of the competition to become one of the top five individual ideas in the country. I know these positions are advertised in certain areas, but it is quite evident what went on Manalapan. Perhaps you have not dealt with the asst. principals in our schools, but my children and I have in the past. Wall Schools Super Slated To Become Colts Neck High Principal

Daniel Simon's appointment awaits Monday vote of Freehold Regional High School District school board.

Daniel Simon, current Wall Township Schools Superintendent, is slated to leave the embattled school district to join the Freehold Regional High School District, according to the high school district’s Board of Education meeting agenda.  Simon, who joined Wall Township schools just more than a year ago, is to become the Principal of Colts Neck High School, according to the agenda. A vote on his appointment is scheduled for Monday’s board meeting. Simon, should he get board approval Monday, will be paid $155,221 for the Colts Neck job – $12,279 less than his annual $166,500 paycheck in Wall Township. Simon on Sunday confirmed that he plans to leave the Wall district, pending the Freehold Regional school board vote, but he declined to comment…

Sure is something fishy going on, but there is no indication it has anything to do with Super Simon. The assistant, Sandra Brower (indicted) was already damaged goods in Lacey Township prior to the appointment of Simon in Wall Township. He replaced former Wall Super Jim Habel( also damaged goods),who is under investigation and had his home raided last June.   more ›

MATES Students Win State 'Envirothon' Competition

Students from Brick, Toms River among the winners

For the fourth year in a row, a team of high school students from the Marine Academy of Technology and Environmental Sciences (MATES) in Manahawkin was the winner of the New Jersey Envirothon, held Saturday, May 4 at Girl Scout Camp Kettle Run in Medford, the state's Department of Agriculture has announced. The team, consisting of  Emily Golembiski of Little Egg Harbor, Jillian Hubbard of Toms River, Gillian Schriever of West Creek, Michael Signorelli of Toms River and Megan Tumpey of  Brick, will represent New Jersey in the 2013 North American Envirothon at Montana State University in Bozeman, Montana in August.  The Ocean County students competed against 33 other teams on knowledge of natural resources-related topics, including soils, …
